Mayor, City of Gastonia 1997-1999, Gaston County Commissioner 1978-1994
1. How would you propose to reduce gang activity and crime in Gastonia?
Work closely with the schools particularly with the middle and high schools to prevent school dropouts. Cooperate with the City and County Police, Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement jurisdictions — crime is cross-jurisdictional.
2. Terms of office have been extended from two to four years for city government, where do you see projects in the city’s urban core (U.S. 321/I-85 entrance, historic downtown business district, Highland neighborhoods, Franklin Avenue and the Loray Mill) in four years?
Loray may be finished in four years. Try to remedy traffic back up at the I-85/321 interchange. Franklin Avenue seems to be moving in a positive direction. Continue to encourage private and some private/public cooperation in historic downtown.
3. What do you think the most important infrastructure needs are in Gastonia, Gaston County, as the area continues to grow?
Water/sewer extensions, future regional water/sewer facilities for our county with Gastonia being the lead agency. Buildings of 12,000+ square-feet require water for sprinkler systems. Transportation and road improvements. New schools/remodeled schools to meet current and future demands.
4. What do you think are the two biggest issues in Gastonia?
Planning for good growth by continue to follow the 2010 and 2020 plans. Ensure Gastonia has ample clean water resources. Proper zoning. Plan for and build ample roads to avoid congestion and maintain our current roads.
